One Life At A Time

A few weeks ago I posted ‘The Story of Mocha.’ Mocha was rescued from the Pinal County Animal Control Shelter and is now looking for a forever home. This past weekend I had the awesome opportunity to photograph at her first adoption event at the Chandler PetSmart (Germann Road at Gilbert Road and the 202).

While Mocha met a lot of great people at the adoption event, she still hasn’t found her forever home. No worries though! While Mocha has not been adopted, she has a wonderful foster home to stay at with her foster mom Barbara Jean.

Thanks to the organization ‘Helping Orphaned Hounds,’ instead of experiencing fear and stress at the pound, Mocha’s biggest worry these days is protecting the kitties at her foster home. (She loves cats, kids and other dogs.)

One of the things I love about ‘Helping Orphaned Hounds’ is how the organization operates. They take in between 350 to 500 dogs each year from county shelters. The number they are able to save depends on the number of dogs needing medical attention and the number of fosters available. Once these lucky dogs leave the pound, they never return since, if necessary, HOH will take back any animal they adopt out regardless of the situation. HOH actually places the dogs it rescues in temporary homes called foster homes while they work to find permanent forever homes for them. A big part of the process are the weekly adoption events HOH organizes. Typically these events are held at places like PetSmart. The dogs are brought to the events by their foster families and get to meet potential new families while learning socialization skills.

If a dog does not find a home right away, HOH doesn’t give up on them. They work as long as it takes to find a family for these guys. That means dogs like Mocha, who would have possibly been lost or even killed in the shelter system, are safe and happy and on their way to a wonderful new life.

Helping Orphaned Hounds is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization founded by Rhonda Wagner Kuehn and Jason Rieker.
